Response to First Press Games’ Ridiculous Delay Statement

I’m not gonna repeat the usual mantra and to be frank I don’t even think this could be considered a limprint article due to how I’m gonna focus on one specific aspect today. If you need catching up, read my last article on First Press Games, a company who has ghosted buyers, scammed indie devs out of their money (per their own words) through non-payment, and has made a bunch of nonsense excuses for why they haven’t shipped products meant to come out five years ago.

Since the article went up, FPG opened a blog for status updates. Should be a good step, right? Well to give you an idea on how it went, their first few posts had comments opened, but with manual approval (not unlike here, but at least here, I approve pretty much everything as long as it isn’t spam or offensive), and before they decided to eliminate the comment section anyway, only one “thank you” comment in German got approved. Yet again, closing an avenue for customers to reach out to them.

And then the status updates amounted to a bunch of random excuses. Ranging from insisting these were CE delays caused by someone else, totally not FPG’s fault at all, (ignoring the standard edition wait time/indie dev payment issues) insisting they were gonna ship soon, to oh no, they aren’t now, they’ll be a while due to bad cardboard manufacturing, to “soon”. They also got in trouble with the Goodboy Galaxy dev, who also is fed up with their shit and hired legal to deal with FPG, who also ghosted them for over a month!

We are also now in Q3 2024. This is the top of their current status update page for all their games. Truly a transparent company.

Yeah. So they mostly went in circles, and as I say a bajillion times, reporting on every slip a limprint company does is not something I desire to do. I’ve had much more fun working on other reviews and articles that weren’t Limprint related since the FPG article, and I’m only making this followup/response because their recent blogpost from today is so absurd, so stupid, so outright insane to the point I feel forced to break it down bit by bit to respond and highlight just how this company either truly does not get why fans and devs are annoyed with them, and seems to think being publicly mad at something else and trying to get the fans angry at them angry at others, will magically fix everything. That, and no big gaming websites seems to care that a company is scamming independent developers and breaking german laws to do so, so yet again it seems like I’m the only one with a platform that can break this down and highlight it on a slightly bigger scale.

Also one of the people FPG is clearly mad at, is me. Which is awkward, but more on that in a bit.

So we get through all that fluff, which others on the limitedprintgames subreddit have gone through more than I have/want to outside of me leaving a comment here and there, and we get to today’s status update. After a prior one blaming delays on cardboard and a bad contractor, while also vaguely implying legal action on people by them citing “an increase in libellous and defamatory posts on various platforms, also including leaking of personal information of our staff. We are fully prepared to take legal action, if necessary.”, it seems like they’re hoping to get in people’s good graces again, and once more, act tough with threats.

So… Let’s break this down, bit by bit. You can read the article here https://firstpressgames.com/blogs/news/statement-regarding-the-ongoing-delay-situation-深刻な遅延理由の詳細の公式発表 alongside me if you wish, or maybe check to compare to this article, as I am citing it exactly as it was written today, July 9th, 2024. For all I know, they could stealth edit it at any time, and I’ll edit this article here if they do.

Just… Read along with me and let me show you why this whole update is by far the worst communication message from any limited print company i’ve ever seen. Yes, even worse than the Shiren incident from LRG. At least that eventually ended in people getting a case and also a swift refund. I will put my comments in brackets like so (Hello!) so you know what’s my words and what is their words.

Statement regarding the ongoing delay situation – 「深刻な遅延理由の詳細の公式発表」

(I did not translate or add the JP text. They just like doing JP Text for their blogs. I don’t think anyone on their team is actually from japan, but I may be mistaken. I know they work with JP devs and have sold JP variants, but I doubt their already small size of buyers are from Japan. Japan doesn’t even like the limited print market stuff to begin with, and I have people in the know who have pointed this out.)

Dear customers, dear partners,

for a long time now you are waiting for several of our products to be shipped. We were not able to fulfil many orders because we are continuously facing broken promises by our printing partners. We have yet again been informed that the company responsible for the punching tools is going to delay their delivery due to summer vacation. We sincerely apologize for this situation.

(“A Long time” is a very kind way of putting how games like Psychotic Adventures have been MIA since 2019. That’s just for the standard editions. That’s not a normal Limprint delay, that means something is critically wrong. Also, “Printing Partners” has been their common excuse of late, even though the literal only thing related to that which impact the standard editions here, is the cardboard sleeve. That’s literally it. The rest are typical switch game cases/carts manufactured by Nintendo that the publisher has to order, and a random coin FPG likes to throw in which could be made by literally anyone. Even Dispatch Games of all companies, manufactured coins and shipped them out for Jajamaru before going ghost.

Also “Broken Promises?” How do you think the customers feel after so, so many delays, even for standard editions? Or indie devs who never got paid, or have to wait through ghosting from their own publisher to get a statement on their own darn game? Project Blue’s dev gave a bunch of examples of them being ghosted and told one thing only for another thing to change, so this is just laughable.)

Up until now we haven’t provided any detailed information regarding the delays, but we can no longer endure keeping silent. It causes a massive inconvenience to our customers, we are losing trust because we believed the word of our contractors, and we are forced again and again to reschedule our releases without being able to name a concrete date.

(Ooooooooookaaaayyyyy except you haven’t because you ghost customers who email you, ghost customers who ask for refunds, ghost devs who ask for updates, and still have Q1 release dates for games that aren’t shipped yet despite it now being Q3 2024. You arguably lost trust back in 2020 when the standard editions took quite a while by then, and it just got worse the further and further out from Mulaka/Megagun things got. Especially when those games never had their CEs finished! Those CEs were also up for order in… 2019. Certainly not all the cardboard company’s fault.)

There are false and defamatory information spread online and even threats against us have been made.

(Ah, there it is. The vague blame game. I don’t often like to make a point or feeling like something is referring to me when it probably isn’t, but in this case I’m almost certain this entire blog and all the passive-aggressiveness was spurred by my prior big article on FPG because I openly called out the guy in charge of the company, I openly called out incidents such as the refund ghosting of customers [cited by many, many people I personally know and others on various social media, just look on twitter/reddit and you’ll find dozens of people citing a lack of a response when trying to ask the normal way] and how the only way anyone got any refund at all, was by invoking Verbraucherzentrale or doing a paypal dispute if their paypal just recently bought the game and the request is made within the window. [which often I hear, goes in the customer’s favor if done in the window, since FPG often doesn’t even respond to the paypal disputes in time!].

Literally, those were the only ways people got any sort of response! If being told something akin to you must refund me per german law or I will report you to Verbraucherzentrale is a “threat”, then maybe just follow your darn country’s consumer rights laws to begin with! Or reply promptly to people emailing you instead of ghosting them! Up your communication game, because it clearly is the reason people had to go around finding means before even trying the Verbraucherzentrale to begin with, since you’ve ghosted some customers for over five years. Literally so much of the anger people had could have been avoided if you just replied to people instead of making excuses. Is the Project Blue dev someone who defamed you? Or how about the Powa dev? Or the Psychotic Origins Dev? or the Goodboy Galaxy dev? Are all of them saying they were ghosted by you defamation statements too, FPG, or is this just a way of acting like negative news is fake and only your blog is to be trusted. Anyhow, we continue…)

We and you are facing the consequences of their “we will make it happen by day x! We are on the home stretch!”. And then shortly before the delivery date we yet again receive information about sudden holidays, suspiciously timed sick leaves or smoky machines.

(Um… That’s literally what you did with all your standard editions from 2019 save for a few, which seem to match with games that were requiring lower MOQ amounts to begin with like Natsuki/Ginga that sold well. It would get to the end of a quarter, you’d delay it last minute, not explain anything, and ignore emails asking for more info. For years on end.)

Another thing that has been happening is failing to make corrections as ordered or providing us with materials not up to our specifications or being subpar in quality. All that although we have submitted the specs more than one year ago.

(Uhhh what about the “it’s been over five years” do you guys not understand? Also… If cardboard is really the holdup on standard edition games… Just get rid of it? Or show photos of the switch game carts/loose PS4 discs, the components that have been made in the meantime? You did that with Chained Echoes stuff a while ago, why not for Psychotic Adventures or Crimzon Clover? Can we see the game carts? Surely five years is enough time to make a game cart for the Switch!)

After manufacturing parts that are not fitting the CE inner trays they even blamed us of urging them to hurry, after being late for over half year themselves. So us urging them is a very natural stance and must not impact the quality. We are not the ones to blame here.

(Except again, you are the ones to blame, for lack of transparency and again, for the non collector edition items that are delayed. Fans of physical media have dealt with long delays for CEs. Especially if they’re crazy packed with lots of detail and info. They’re used for waiting one, maybe two years, maybe longer if it was a kickstarter. Just ask the Wonderful 101 Remastered backers how their ultra super high tier for that Kickstarter is going; I argue that is just as crazy of a situation! But at least the devs got paid to make the game there and have trickled out some stuff over the past few years for that game.

None of that should be impacting the standard editions of several games that have been on the eShop for years. Sydney Hunter and Crimzon Clover should have had their standards long shipped by now. Also, not every item in your CEs are made of cardboard. Show those items off, again, like you did for Chained Echoes.)

Due to legal reasons, we are obliged to keep the printing company’s name confidential for now, but we decided to at least disclose some details to you:

All punching drawings were submitted in April 2023

(April 2023?!? Some CEs have been up for order since 2019! What was that gap for?)

In December 2023, we were promised that everything will be ready before Christmas.

After that the excuses started: Not able to deliver because of “it’s before Christmas”, “it’s between the holidays”, “staff shortage because of COVID/winter/flu”, “carnival week”, “spring holiday season” and now it’s “summer vacation time”.

(Funny, you guys also blamed Covid and the War in Ukraine for why standards and CEs weren’t out in 2020-2022. Covid I get to a point, but Ukraine? Outside of slowing down shipping… How does that impact ordering carts or discs from Nintendo and Sony? Also maybe you should I dunno, find a new company or do better research into them if you keep hiring terrible ones to make cardboard.)

We are waiting for only five parts but unfortunately all Collector’s Editions are affected as one vital part per variant (mostly the tray for the game itself) is missing.

(OK… And standard editions…? And pics of the other components from various CEs? Maybe Sydney Hunter’s Puzzle, or the Crimzon Clover accessories, or maybe some CDs? None of this explains why those are long MIA, you know.)

Thus the missing parts are halting every release that was scheduled for a release after.

(How. How?!?! Are you forced to ship things in sequential order? I don’t think so! Sure seems like all hands are on deck for chained echoes anyway, and the Qute shmup duo shipped standards out before Psychotic Adventures did, so you broke your rules previously! Why would it now be mandatory for the games to ship in the production order? Obviously it’s good to get the older games out first, but… If one is easier and quicker to make than the other and you can make it now, why not make it now to prove to customers that manufacturing is stable? This is just insane, honestly.)

So far we have been working with four printing companies in Germany that claimed to specialize in printing of boxes in the required way. Initially all these contractors had taken on the job saying, “We can do it, it’s just some simple boxes”. At First Press Games, we trusted these statements and entrusted them with these tasks.

Things seemed to go well at first with every contractor, but gradually unnecessary modifications were made, and the number of defective prints we could not use increased. Unreasonable delays became more and more frequent. There have been cases where we were asked to pay for piles of defective printed material and heaps of garbage that we could not use in any way. This led to us to change our contractors repeatedly resulting in the current situation.

Additional problem is the fact that neither of them were willing to put any deadlines in writing, even after numerous requests, as they feared to be sued for liabilities should they not meet those deadlines. We had to reluctantly accept it for they would plainly refused to accept the job. So it’s not easy to pursue legal action against them but nevertheless we have sought legal advise and are fully prepared to enforce our rights and claim damages. We are currently holding such drastic action as we are moving on, although at a snail’s pace

(Four companies?!? All bad with manufacturing CARDBOARD? Jeez, I know Limprint quality control has gone down the toilet all across the board lately, but this is just a bit absurd but also sadly believable. Would actually explain a lot on how LRG and such get CEs that have weird oddities or are different from prior CEs in quality, but even they find pretty decent cardboard for their boxes…)

We at First Press Games intend to manufacture products for collectors that are of the highest quality. Always of the same color, shape and haptics. Once the punching tools are finished, all shapes established and the color of the outer sleeves matches that of the previous releases, then all problems besides the additional time we will need for assembling will disappear and we should not face any more delays. But a small number of parts currently halts thousands of games from being shipped.

(…Your Standard Editions have not shipped in ages. You have a game from 5 years ago that is not made and the dev has not been paid for that length of time. He’s public about it. Where are the carts and discs?!? Photograph the carts and discs! Also to be frank, nobody gives a piss if the cardboard sleeve on the standard editions are a different shade of brown or whatnot! It’s annoying yeah but at that point if you’re holding back games for FIVE YEARS over a sleeve, something is very, very wrong. Even the CE delays, are getting to be unbelievable. This seems more like stubbornness for perfection more than anything else, and it’s causing the devs to be unhappy too.)

Every day we are in contact with the printing partners. Visiting the factories in person several times per week, almost hourly phone calls and yet we are still facing empty promises, although progress is being made. Just today we received the confirmation that one of the remaining five trays has been prepared.

(Ah and I bet that’s probably for Chained Echoes since that’ll be the first one out the door considering how it sold and all… And it still doesn’t explain the standard editions of older games being MIA. Or why you ignore emails on refunds and other questions. Or why you shut down your social media comment section.)

Keeping silent on this matter has led to a lot of customers to lose faith in us because it seems that we are just randomly shifting deadlines. False accusations and threats against us increased, which is why we decided to finally go public with the details of the delay.

(There it is again!!! “Threats” and “False Accusations” because I wrote an article compiling many people who TRIED TO CONTACT YOU and DID NOT GET A RESPONSE on REFUNDS OR ETAS and rather than tell those people contacting you years ago all this, you had to wait for a random fox furry on the internet to write an article compiling how long your release gaps were, and how your shopify data showed some stuff barely sold at all which probably implied it didn’t make much money to make the stuff, [or at least, stuff from a better, more expensive manufacturer than whoever is making your cardboard] and how Chained Echoes was the first game in ages to break that trend and now that’s the game which seems to be getting all the focus from you guys.

And the fact devs I linked to on their own social media feeds have said you never paid them or took so long to pay them, and thus had to get a lot of people worked up for you to finally pay some of them such as the Project Blue guy, to the point I’m almost pulling my hair out reading this. If you are annoyed with people contacting the German consumer agency, then STOP GHOSTING THEIR EMAILS! God, this just drives me bonkers.

And on the whole “threats” angle, since I never want to come off as an asshole or ever support hateful or awful conduct, I should obviously restate that if any of my readers are legitimately trying to threaten employees at FPG in any way or sending hate to them on a personal level, knock it off right this instant. I’m literally the guy who edited all my Limited Run Games articles because as much as I do not like that company, I hated people using those old articles for gross transphobic ammo even more, and threw in links to the Trevor Foundation and restated that they were in the right for firing that transphobe.

If FPG seriously has reason to believe that my last article counts as misinformation or a threat, they can easily email me at my business address found on my youtube channel’s contact info and tell me what I missed or what I badly got wrong. I’m not that hard to contact that way, and if they were to fully explain the refund dodging, ghosting of indies (per their word), and why standard edition cartridges or discs are still not being shown after 5 years, I’d be more than happy to relay that info to my readers. But anyways, I digress.)

There are various incredible statements accusing us of stealing money and even splitting it up with the developers without any intention to release the games we took preorder money for. In the past there were such companies and their “fate” is still vivid. First Press Games is not one of them and we are not making the reasons for the current delay up.

(I mean… My statements accusing you of not paying devs is literally because several devs said and are on the record of having not gotten payment and could not get ahold of you guys, at all. The only “splitting it up with the developers” incident that might be remotely plausible is the Chained Echoes situation, since it seems Deck13 already got their bag, again, from their own statements on the game’s own discord server. I’m also not the only one to make these statements or guesses. Otherwise it just sounds like developers don’t get paid until all the editions are finished and shipping. And yes, people are worried about you guys because other limprints said the same shit and went ghost. Give people a reason to not worry the same.

I also don’t believe you never intended to release anything, as you guys clearly have passion, but something definitely went wrong and rather than own up to your own mistakes, you just point to everyone else. I don’t see hardly anything in this update going “this was a huge mistake and we are very sorry” for the things you are able to do that for. All of this message reads like a passive aggressive “fine shut up about the delays see it’s not our fault!” and it feels insulting to the preorder folk who have waited HALF A DECADE for a simple case with a switch cart in it. This is just can kicking until you hope people stop getting mad so a miracle solution will happen to make everything good again, but ignoring refund requests is again, something I can point to over a dozen proven examples of you guys doing, and something you guys can easily fix by just, replying to customer emails more often.)

And while all of this is going on, there are a lot of projects we are working on. We will reveal them when the time is right, as we do not intend to further being marked as a company that only takes preorder money and doesn’t deliver. We haven’t announced a new game for a year and a half so if we were facing financial trouble we would have started a preorder a long time ago to stay afloat.

(You said that before Sydney Hunter got announced, then Sydney Hunter happened and you assured people that would be out quickly, then it didn’t come out quickly, and now it too has been MIA for years… And outside of a GBC game from early last year nobody is really worried about as the core game is still in development, I’m pretty sure there’s almost no way any developer is gonna trust you with manufacturing something for them with your wait times and poor transparency. Then again, some GBC devs are going to Palmer Lucky of all people for manufacturing their games, so who knows how desperate some people are.)

A big thank you to all loyal customers and to all developers and companies working with us and approaching us with new projects despite the facts. We vow to resolve the issues without giving up, just as we have done so for years. Thank you very much for reading this long text to the end.

Sincerely

First Press Games

(Oh my god we’re finally done! But yeah, uh, this update was just insane. All focusing on cardboard, all complaining about a cardboard company, also complaining about vague “threats” and “misinformation”, all not addressing the unpaid devs on the record, or the customers not getting their refund requests answered, or the fact your own damn website didn’t update the ETAs since March when it’s July now, and just more can kicking hoping people don’t keep refunding or using the german consumer agency to get the refund they’re legally owned.

FPG, you can literally fix this by being fully transparent, both to your devs and customers, on where every individual component is at in the manufacturing process. Passive aggressive blogposts accomplish nothing. Especially when you again, lock out comments on social media to prevent the community and potential new buyers from contacting you.

But I suspect per the Goodboy Galaxy dev struggling to get ahold of you and him feeling very burned by the lack of communication, that this will just keep up until the whole thing collapses. And if it does, it’s your fault, not Mr Cardboard Company 1000.

Oh yeah there’s a JP ver underneath this so maybe i’ll just copy it below in case there’s some extra line only in Japanese idk sorry for the JP bloat below but I wanna cover my bases here.)

  1. I’ve been complaining about this company for years. I’m a KS backer of Goodboy Galaxy, and almost literally begged him to get a lawyer to light a fire under this joke of a companys ass. Mindseize is another game I was looking forward to getting a physical of, but unfortunately it looks like it’ll never happen cause of… guess who… fpg, again! IMO, the whole thing is nothing but a ponzi scheme. Wait to scam a dev of a new game to get older games out the door finally and repeat the process over and over again. Great article! I shared it with the KS comments page of Goodboy Galaxy. Lots of upset ppl there with fpg. I want them to see just how ridiculous their excuses are, and there’s plenty more this article didn’t mention. How about their excuse that a game needed a bug fixed, and that it’s taking them longer to fix a bug than it took the dev to make the entire game!!!! Beyond pathetic excuses!

    1. The Project Blue dev lighting them on fire a few months ago was what got me alerted and angry enough to start writing about them despite me wanting to abstain from limprint drama. I just can’t stand seeing indies getting screwed.

I’m also pretty peeved with the CE publisher since on the chained echoes discord, they seem very casuals about the delays and such and legit do not get why people are mad about FPG. I think them getting paid upfront really tainted their perspective especially when CE is the game that FPG is most likely to make and get out the door before they fold. RIP to the indies they screwed over and customers waiting five years, i guess
